Latest Branch News - June, 2024

THE BEACON OF LIGHT

Following on from suggestions received at the Branch Meeting of 7 May 2024 the committee have made arrangements for a tour of the facilities at 11.00am on Thursday 27 June* by Jemma Dowson, Head of Altruism. Those attending should meet in the coffee shop on the ground floor. Following the tour an area may have been set aside for our inaugural meeting. Free parking is available at the nearby Stadium of Light Green and Blue car parks, but members should allow about 5 minutes to walk into the well signposted venue. For those members who have a Blue Badge then they can park at the nearby secure Sunderland Aquatic Car Park but should make sure they mention that they are attending The Beacon and not The Aquatic Centre. The Beacon, under the umbrella organisation of The Foundation of Light, has charitable status and is structurally and financially independent from the football club. They are responsible for fundraising £4million each year to run their life changing programmes. Every penny made from bookings goes straight back to the Foundation for future events. They were the first community hub of its kind in the UK and are like no other. Providing opportunities for all ages and abilities. From children to young people, or those living on their own or families, they are here for everyone. A space for sport, events, education and wellbeing which is open to everyone of all ages and backgrounds. Their aim is to create better opportunities and support the community to live better and healthier lives.

The building caters for outdoor and indoor football with 3G 5-a-side Pitches and a 4G Indoor Barn. Other activities include Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Pickle-Ball, Netball and a multi-purpose games area. However, for anyone who has yet to visit the centre, it caters for so much more and you will be amazed at the other activities which will be highlighted as part of the tour. We hope to attract a good response from members as it was agreed that the branch would subsidise the hiring of courts for the first 12 months. There is also the prospect that some members may only wish to meet up socially, for a cuppa and chinwag, as an alternative to the evening branch meetings, not a problem. Those attending on the 27th can have a free cuppa for their support. At that time of the day lunch will be available at very competitive prices.

NB on this occasion it is mainly about familiarisation on what is available and a get together rather than participating in sporting events on the day which can come later.

* It was intended that we should meet up on the third Thursday (3Th) of each month but there are 1,000 people attending an event on that day, hence the temporary move to the 27 June. The following date if all goes well will be on 18 July.
